I had an hour until class I left the office for a minute came back and I was locked out. I had no phone, no car keys, just myself! The wave of panic quickly going to negative thoughts-this always happen, I have bad key karma on and on. I had to take a step back and breathe. I decided because I was also hot to go rinse my face off. The cool water felt so good and soothing. Ah, I was ready to take on the situation at hand. I enlisted the help of other office personnel and finally the landlord to get back into the office. I was joined by my class. The topic for the class was using the skill of self soothe for distress tolerance. We had a fist hand example in the lock out. The ability to reconnect with our body and engage all the senses can help bring us into the moment. The skill of self soothe is about taking care and comforting ourselves. Children provide excellent examples of this-soft blankets, humming and singing, watching their world with new perspective and focus. These are things we all still need and yearn for. So sometimes just a little cool water on your face can be the beginning of tolerating a difficult situation!

Chinese take out box, coupons, and online surveys-It is all about the distracting! Today in class we will look at the art of distracting and dealing with crisis situations. We each have a colorful chinese take out box to fill with the strategies that will help us deal with a crisis situation. You know those times when you struggle to get out of negative thoughts, a difficult situation or when we just feel really yucky! What will work to distract us for even just a moment? Of course mindfulness works but sometimes we need a distracter to get to the mindfulness. Distracting is the art of pulling your attention to something other than the thoughts or situation. It is different for each of us. We work through the ones that are well known-read, count to ten, take a walk these are good and good only when we will do them that’s the kicker we just do not do them. So the things you put in the box would be the strategies you would possibly do! The great thing about discussing this with a group is there are so many great ideas to learn about distracting! Who knew the world of coupons could be so exciting and distracting? What about doing online surveys? How about just the focus to find the surveys on line? There are so many great authors of really scary books to explore. Nature provides endless opportunities to distract. We all agree animals can provide the best distraction with so much joy! Best of all is the distracting that occurred as we filled our boxes with the shared ideas and hope. What’s in your box?

What is your head talking about and are you listening? Wow it is amazing the thoughts, feelings, fears, worry, memories and more that float through our head or mind. Negative thought loops are the worst with worry a close second. The trouble is all this stuff affects our mood and state of mind if we let it. Boy is it easy to let it. I believe many of us could write Lifetime movies from our own dramas. What to do about this? Mindfulness, mindfulness and more mindfulness! Try to be in just this moment. In order to do this we must slow down. Breathe. Breathe. Sometimes focusing on the breath we can use naming and describing-naming this is a thought or this is a judgment, this is a feeling or this is a picture. Sort of pulling out and standing away from the thought or feeling. My favorite is asking; “is this a fact?” Would I agree if my best friend told me this? If she told me she was thinking everyone hates her would I answer and agree? (“Oh yes you are right everyone does hate you.”) Not likely. I would try to persuade her that this was not true and she had things mixed up and it is not a fact. I would try to get her to see it was just her thoughts and judgments. I would tell her to calm down and breathe. This is the same practice and advice we must give our selves. Then pull back into the present moment and breathe. It is a practice we must do over and over. It can free us from our head!

This week our lives changed forever when our beautiful Labrador retriever Rexford died suddenly. It is remarkable how we can be laughing and peaceful one minute and in the next one our heart can be squeezed with such sadness and grief, it takes your breath away. The loss of this family pet, good friend, furry child and hunting partner is one of the hardest events we have been through. Rex was the eternal puppy and so often would teach us about the importance of mindfulness and living in the moment. Each morning he would greet us with lively energy almost saying “hey- this is great - another day-lets eat and walk.” He loved carrying things often taking our shoes outside and leaving somewhere in the yard or he may have an umbrella or a piece of furniture he had to have something in his mouth and sometimes it would make us laugh and sometimes not! He loved to retrieve and could spend hours bringing the ball or bumper back. He loved to wrestle with our children and because he was built like he was made out of cement he could give them a good go. Rex protected his property and could put on a fine display of dominance some were even afraid of him. He was really all show. Rex was sweet, excited always to see you, to listen to you, to sit with you. Rex was unconditional love all wrapped up in soft fur. I will miss him terribly and hopefully will remember his lessons of being here now in the present, of getting excited about each new day and how the same walk is really different if you are present and most of all too truly love with all your heart. Good bye Rexford.

Ever notice when things are going good that a little thought will creep up and say “to good to be true something bad is going to happen”! So what is up with that? We feel bad when we feel bad and we feel bad when we feel good. This is best described as the other shoe dropping syndrome-the fear of impending doom when things are good. Does this happen because we believe we do not deserve to have a good time or good things happening? Is it possible that we use our history that says something good is followed by something bad? We really need to take a look at how we view events in our life, the judgments and assignment of things or events as being good or bad. The moments of our life are just that, not good, not bad they just are. If we can learn to accept things even the things we do not like, the ones that are hard to manage as what is, we will suffer less. Have you ever had an event that felt horrible at first only to later learn that it was really for the best? We can never understand the full picture of life or how things will play out. Life is always a sacred mystery. So if you can learn to tolerate the discomfort of not liking what happens in the moment, let it go and stay with what is you will suffer less. The other shoe dropping may be a delightful new style that you did not anticipate!

Remember it started with your thumb or pacifier and moves to letting go of your youth, your children, your job and possibly your partner. Letting go is how we move through life. It is bittersweet and usually involves pain. Sometimes we hold on with fingernails dug in not wanting or accepting that it will happen. It always happens, it goes, they go and things change. To ease the suffering of letting go we must find acceptance to what is, not approval but acceptance. Stop fighting and go with the flow, find humor in what must be. We feel the pain and move through with acceptance. The air clears and we settle and before long we are on to the next “it or they”. And guess what? We are worried about letting that go!

The morning routine can sometimes cause stress in the completion. After discussing with a friend that in order to finish the morning routine I really can not work because it takes until noon to finish! Think of it: exercise, shower, floss teeth, eat a healthy breakfast, meditate, walk the dog , which could be exercise except on weight training days, get things in order for the day, pack lunch, check e-mails and voice mails, check on children, check on parents, what about errands for the day, the list goes on and on. The one that usually goes for me is the meditation. I get lost in the thought if I can not sit for 30 minutes it will not count. I do not know who is counting but I think they would take five minutes if that is all I had. So how can you stay healthy physically, emotionally and spiritually and still have time for family and work? I think it has to do with being mindfully and choosing carefully where we put our attention. This can start in how we use our time and energy. The most important get finished and others spaced out in the day. On busy days meditation may only be 10 minutes and that is just fine. Maybe make a lunch the night before? The process of doing one thing at a time with attention can be a start. Then moving through the day mindfully present to this moment is the next step. The steps are not hard to do they are just hard to remember in all the busy work. What do you think?

Our minds slip so quickly into the dramas and stories we keep running. We are often in the story before realizing it. Animals especially dogs have a wonderful gift of mindfulness. My dog can go on the same walk each day and be as excited as the first time he took it. I think he is very Zen in the way he walks and experiences the world. He is in the moment. I often walk the dog and practice walking meditation. Many times I slip into a story in my head or a very important worry. The dog will suddenly pull to one side waking me up and reminding me to be present to him and the walk! I bring my focus back to the walking meditation. It is helpful to create reminders to stay present all during the day. The reminder can be the ring of the phone, a train traveling by or a bell sounds something you find in your environment. Try to think of something today to help you remember to be mindful!

Finding balance. The body is amazing in its ability to stay balanced in movement. The wonder of walking, running and dancing are daily reminders of balance. Remember being young and enjoying spinning around on a merry-go-round or just twirling then waiting for your body to right its balance? It would be some seconds usually with laughter and sometimes a weird stomach ach in the process. Soon things were in focus and you were ready to try again! Our emotional body is equally amazing. Emotions are amazing in their movements from sad, angry, and aggravated to joyous, happy and peaceful. Sometimes they are spinning with life challenges. Sometimes they feel as if they get stuck. Most time we do not wait some seconds with laughter or a weird stomach for the emotions to right themselves in balance. Many times we just keep spinning and keep them going in a whirl. Maybe if we would just stop, take a moment and just experience for some seconds they would pass and balance could be found. What do you think?
